Arthur Hailey was born in England but he spent his adult life in North America. His own love for aviation motivated him to write a story about the aviation world. He is a well-known writer in Toronto. Flight in Danger was his first success.
I have travelled by plane several times, and I have never felt anxious or worried about whether my life was at risk during the jorney. Howewer, Airport is a fictional plot which could become true nowadays. The action of the book is centred round Lincoln International Airport in Chicago, during one of the worst snowstorms ever.
The main character is Mel Bakersfeld, the man responsible for keeping the Airport open. There is a problem with the snow, and the main runway is not in use because it is being blocked by an Aereo-Mexican plane. Also, this airport is very near Meadwood, a small town near Chicago city. And people living in Meadwood are unhappy because of the noise from the airport and they are planning to protest. A lonely man is beginning to make plans which will be dangerous for the passengers.
This and more troubles make the reading matter more and more interesting. If you have never travelled by plane, please don´t read it !
